Finish The One You Hate

Sometimes about halfway through a drawing, I'll realize that the sketch I'm working on is completely inappropriate for the character I'm designing. Rather than abandon the unfinished design and start over, I try to finish the drawing. By working through a "bad" design, I sometimes land on an idea that wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise.

Hello Patrick,
I've been thoroughly enjoying your blog. Thanks for all the time and effort you're putting into it.
I've got a question about the sketches you're posting, particularly the ones which have the gradient backgrounds such as the one in today's post. I'm assuming you scan your sketches and then apply gradient fills with Photoshop or something similar. Is this correct? They look really nice.
How do you organize your sketches for future reference - or do you?! Do you scan all your sketches this way, or do you keep them in a sketchbook, notepad, file cabinet, etc.

Hey Matt,
I'm glad you're enjoying the blog. I scanned this sketch into Photoshop, deleted the background and applied a gradient fill to the bottom layer.
I don't organize my sketches in any particular way, most of them are drawn in art pads. I don't scan all my drawings, just the ones I plan to color in Photoshop or feature in my blog.
