Swazzle Workshop Shoot

Here are a few photos from our latest puppet project; The "Swazzle Workshop". Sean, Patrick, Victoria (Johnson), Tim (Sweeney), and myself all worked on this project (we shot it at the Chiodo Brothers in burbank. Here are a few shots of Sean and Patrick getting started:

This one is a wide(ish) shot of the set, you can see that it's fully lit. Sean is the Tiger puppet & Victoria is Mousedeer puppet (you can make out their legs in this shot). Patrick is directing.

The first 'episode'features a craft from our puppet show Harry and the Tyrannosaurus Rex. In this photo, we have Tim on the T-Rex craft puppet, Victoria (Mousedeer), and Sean (Tiger).

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been following your blog for some time, as I am working on a puppets-for-tv project here in Brazil.

Your posts have been most helpful.

I will have a blog about our efforts up and running shortly.

Thanks for the encouragement! We are slowly working through a lot of the technical details. Our biggest problem now is the lack of a professional studio, and the subsequent inferiority in sound and film quality. We have run a couple of episodes on the local TV channel. You can check out the video here:

I also posted some "making-of" pictures on my blog:

This is the third episode we have done, and we get better with each one. On the youtube video you can see a head and an occasional arm, but these do not show up on TV.

Hey Andrew!

I finally got a chance to watch your YouTube video and I thought it looked really cute! I'm sure any problems with video quality are extremely pronounced on TV but, for and online bit, it looked really nice. The sound was, I agree, a littly tinny. What are you using for mics? Are the puppeteers individually mic'd or are you using one mic for the area?

As for studio space...we've shot in some crazy places and it comes out looking fine...it's just hard on the performers but, we slog through. As a matter of fact, the Swazzle Workshop vids are the first ones we've really done in a professional setting!

Keep me posted on your videos!

Anita,

That certainly is encouraging! At present we are only using the microphone on the camera. I am not happy with this situation, but it is what we have available for the moment. I am working on setting up a sound board, with individual wireless mics for all performers. Does this work well, or do you have another recommendation?

We are also working to improve the quality of our puppeteering. We have dedicated volunteers who are committed to doing the best job possible, so we are making progress. Your blog and others have provided us with a bottomless well of inspiration!

The "Cidade Feliz" blog will be up and running soon. It will probably be a blogger site until I get the funds together for its own domain name.

Thanks again for the encouragement. I continue to follow your site avidly.

A sound board with individual mics is the best! That's what we used for our Swazzle Videos.

I completely understand having to use the camera mic 'cause of costs but, the sound will NEVER be up to snuff. I encourage you to invest in good mic quality. As Sean says, people will look at a crappy picture but, no one will listen to crappy sound!

I'm glad we could be of assistance! Keep checking!
